Secretary of State Series with Gary Hylander: John Hay (YH)

John Hay served as Secretary of State with Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. During his tenure, Secretary Hay addressed territorial issues that arose following the Spanish-American War and the acquisition of the Panama Canal Zone. However, his most important diplomatic achievement was opening the door for trade and commercial relations with China.

Philosophy Lecture Series with Professor Jason Giannetti: Ancient Philosophy (YH)

Wheaton College Professor Jason Giannetti will open his philosophy lecture with a comprehensive survey of Thales and the pre-Socratics, and will move on to Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. In considering their teachings, he will focus on how each thinker defined the One and the Many, a central topic for the early western philosophers.

The fall of the Roman Empire led to the rise of what we now know as the Medieval worldview. Philosophy in this era was very much tied up with theology. We will examine the contributions of such thinkers as Boethius, St. Thomas Aquinas, Moses Maimonides, as well as Islamic thinkers whose ideas helped shape the Jewish and Christian orthodoxy.
