“A Blundering Generation” Lecture Series with Gary Hylander: Compromise of 1850 (YP)

Hoping to settle the boundaries of slavery, Henry Clay of Kentucky proposed a non-negotiable compromise known as the Compromise of 1850. Just six years later, partisan politics shattered this uneasy truce as Democrat Stephen Douglas proposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, reopening the question of the expansion of slavery. The nation was roiled by events in “Bleeding Kansas,” the publication of Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the growing Abolitionist movement.
